searching the depths of Netflix for "Shimmer Lake"

I have always relied on Netflix to give me access to movies that I would have never been able to, to which I will be forever grateful, but lately I've noticed a huge flaw the streaming service has. By the way, it looks like I'm not the only one.

The problem is the algorithm. I find the movies I want eventually, but I typically have to search "Best indies on Netflix" to even get close to a selection I like. I'll admit I don't know much about algorithms, but this much I do know: the "Movies you may like" section has almost never been right. It seems like it completely ignores all of the indies I watch and goes straight for the one anime I got half-way through two years ago and decides I'm the biggest anime fan all of a sudden.

I only came to watch "Shimmer Lake" when I was looking through Netflix one day and it happened to have been release on that day. I recognized the name from an Indiewire article I read the week before, but other than that one mention, "Shimmer Lake" managed to fly completely under my radar, which doesn't happen often.

Now to the real reason for this post, convincing you to watch "Shimmer Lake", one of the best movies you've never heard of:

A Comedy Dream Team

If Rainn Wilson, Adam Pally and Ron Livingston in a movie together is enough to make you interested, stop reading and fire up your nearest streaming device because I promise you won't be disappointed.

The "Fargo" Comparison

I'll admit, this wasn't a selling point for me because I had never seen "Fargo". But this movie did end up convincing me to not only watch "Fargo", but to also all three seasons of the show on FX.

Original Storytelling

In the age of sequels and remakes, it's refreshing to see a completely original story that works. Sure, the tone is familiar as my previous reason suggests, but it doesn't change the unique take on a classic heist-gone-wrong scenario. Plus, the backwards time line is genius.
