Howdy! I'm back! After a much-needed vacation, I'm back on my regular schedule. Now that I'm back, I can get back on track and start to work on a couple of side projects that I'm really excited about.
But until I'm ready to announce those, let's get to what you're all here for.
#158 Ellen Degeneres: Relatable
Available on Netflix
Ellen goes back to what we all forgot she's actually famous for: stand up comedy.
I honestly thought this was going to be boring, but it was really funny and entertaining. It's nice to see that a very famous person who has tons and tons of money, still doesn't take herself seriously. She spent most of the time making fun of herself and it really worked.
#159 Ma
In theaters
A woman seeks revenge on her high school bullies by giving their kids what seems to be the drinking spot of their dreams.
Ever since I saw the trailer, I knew this movie was going to be a train wreck. But one thing I can't say about most terrible movies, is that I had a great time watching it. While it didn't deliver on a lot of basic things, it did make me laugh more than any movie has in a while.
#160 My Teacher, My Obsession
Available on Netflix
A student becomes obsessed with her teacher.
So Ma was the first movie we watched on vacation and this was the second. This is one of those movies, like Ma, that you just have to see to understand how ridiculous it is.
#161 Murder Mystery
Available on Netflix
A couple on their anniversary trip gets trapped in a murder case that somehow only they can solve.
Judging off of Adam Sandler's latest movies, I had very low expectations for this one. So when I say this movie was just 'fine', it sounds bad, but it means a big step for Happy Madison.
#162 Marvin's Room
Available on Hulu
Estranged sisters are forced to meet again after tragedy strikes.
Young Meryl Streep and Leonardo Dicaprio as mother and son? What else do you need in a movie?
#163 Late Night
In theaters
A talk show host is forced to come out of her comfort zone in many ways in order to save her show, including hiring a woman of color as one of her writers.
Mindy Kaling is out here making the romantic, feminist, and funny content we all deserve. I'm definitely watching everything she makes in the future.
#164 Plus One
In theaters
Two college friends make a pact to brave wedding season together as each other's plus ones.
I liked the concept of this movie. Overall, it was a cute little rom com that's not revolutionary, but gets the job done.
#165 Emo: The Musical
Available on Netflix
An emo high school kid tries to navigate his new school.
This musical is as wild as you imagine. It was surprisingly funny and the right amount of silly, without feeling dumb.
#166 Cop Car
Available on Netflix
Two kids on the run find a seemingly abandoned cop car.
I'm not sure if I generally don't like kids or if the kids in this movie were very annoying (honestly, it's probably a little bit of both). However, I do like the subgenre of 'shit increasingly gets out of control', which this movie definitely falls under.
#167 Those People
Available on Netflix
College kids nearing the start of adulthood have a hard time adjusting. Their rich friend doesn't help by bringing them down with his family drama.
This movie was so exhausting. I didn't care about any of the characters because they were just all the worst.
#168 Hotel Mumbai
Available to rent
A retelling of the 2009 attacks.
When I watch movies like this, I always end up just wanting to see a documentary about it. I understand the impulse to reenact it, but I guess I just prefer to hear about the story from people who were there.
