Howdy! So before I get into this weeks movies, I need to give a disclaimer for next week's late post. I'm going on vacation (yay!) and although I love writing for this blog, I must take a vacation from it too. I'll try to get the next post up by Monday, but I can barely do that when I'm completely free, so no promises. Anyway, let's get into it.
#149 Chasing Happiness
Available on Amazon Prime
The Jonas Brothers dive into their crazy career and the aftermath of their breakup.
So I really liked this doc. It was well made, but my biggest issue was that I wanted way more tea and drama than they gave us. But the lack of them fighting on camera didn't make it a bad movie -- it just makes me a bad person.
#150 Night School
Available on Netflix
A documentary that follows adults as they try to earn their high school diplomas.
I can't believe that I have to make this distinction, but this is not the recently released Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish comedy. I've never seen that one, but I can guarantee you this doc is so much better than the other movie. Honestly, it's probably better than any comedy that Kevin Hart's ever been a part of.
#151 The Lion in you Living Room
Available on Netflix
A documentary about cats.
I found this doc very interesting, but that's probably because my son is a cat. Speaking of Ari, he really liked this movie too.
#152 Patton Oswalt: Annihilation
Available on Netflix
Patton Oswalt's take on current events and his reflection on a personal tragedy.
I mostly know Patton Oswalt as an actor, so I've never seen his stand up before, but I really liked it. I loved how honest he was about the sudden loss of his wife and how he didn't hold back. It was really brave of him to talk about such a life-altering event that he was clearly still working through.
#153 Dark Phoenix
In theaters
The latest installment of the X-Men franchise where Fox answered the question: How much worse can they fuck this up? And the answer is: *Spoiler alert* So much worse than we thought.
The only franchise that I've seen every single installment of and loved, was X-Men, so I was excited when they decided to revamp it with younger, better looking actors a few years ago. So you can imagine my disappointment when each movie was worse than the last.
Dark Phoenix was just plain cringey. But what I really hated was that they had a plot line that could've made for an interesting movie, but it was just dangled in front of us, never to be explored. All in all, this movie was a damn mess.
#154 Game of Thrones: The Last Watch
Available on HBOGo
A documentary following the making of the last season of Game of Thrones.
It was nice to have a reminder that real people put a lot of work into these things. It doesn't change my distaste for the last season, but it showed me why I probably didn't like it.
#155 Force Majeure
Available on Hulu
Tensions rise for a couple on a ski trip when a potentially catastrophic event brings out their true colors.
I found this movie on Twitter from some clip people shared that went viral. As most foreign films do, it explored an interesting topic in a inventive way. I found it really funny in a dark way.
#156 The Silence
Available on Netflix
Just picture A Quiet Place with Stanley Tucci and terrible acting.
I was really dumbfounded by this movie's ending, or lack thereof. It felt like they just ran out of time so they slapped a narration on the end and called it a day.
#157 Brad's Status
Available on Amazon Prime
A father questions his life choices on a college trip to Harvard with his son.
The entire movie is set in the mind of an old white man and feels like a monologue of him talking in circles about how much he sucks. At the end, I agreed -- he does suck. Leave the whole "hating yourself" routine to the teens, they do it more interestingly.
Yikes. Sorry for the increasing bitterness of this post. Shows you the kind of Monday I had, I guess. See ya next week with a (hopefully) more upbeat post.
