horror films deserve better

October is just around the corner, so we all know what that means: scary movie season!!

September presented us with great contenders like "IT" and "mother!", and I have a feeling they wont be beat. I remember how October used to be the prime time for great horror films. This year, we are being given a knock-off of "Unfriended" and a "Saw" sequel nobody asked for (yeah, it's technically a spin-off, but if the villain is the same, so is the premise).

Bottom line- Horror films deserve better and here's where we can start:

some sort of acting

For some reason, acting is always a second thought when it comes to horror films. I'm not going to be scared if your actors aren't also believably scared. Acting is just as important in horror as it is in drama. Yea, I said it!

lazy storytelling

Jump scares aren't going away, but they shouldn't be a crutch. Scary movies are evolving into think-pieces that explore the deep, dark corners of our minds and make us live there. So, an actor in makeup popping out doesn't do it for my anymore.

innovation

Horror is arguably the riskiest genre of movie to dip into, so it's strange to me that nobody wants to take risks.

writing

Like acting, good writing in horror films are gone. I can imagine dialogue is hard to write for these films, but if you have an actor say any form of "Is anybody there??", it's not gong too well.

predictability

I'm tired of knowing how each scene is going to play out. I don't want to finish the story in my head before the credits role. The filmmaker's job is to keep us on the edge of our seats. If I'm not uncomfortable, their not doing their job.

take risks

Nobody expects a horror film to play it safe, so why do most of them phone it in? There are so many horror films that could have been better if they didn't hold back. I've said it before and I'l say it again: Jump scares shouldn't be the only way you scare your audience.

sexualization of women

For the love of god; STOP. ADDING. UNNECESSARY. FEMALE. NUDITY.
