Howdy! Welcome to another week. I've spent already ten full minutes trying to think of a quirky way to start this, but my brain is just not having it today. Let's just jump into it.
#45 Ken Jeong: You Complete Me, Ho
Available on Netflix
It's very hard for me to get into stand up, but this one was pretty good. I love when comedians have heartfelt stories that are woven into their show, like Sleepwalk With Me by Mike Birbiglia or basically anything Hasan Minaj does.
#46 Assassination Nation
I really did not think I'd like this movie at all (if you watch the trailer, you'll see why). But it was actually surprising how much I got into it. It had such a clear point of view and I loved how they used music and editing.
#47 Berlin, I Love You
I truly do not know where to start with this one. I liked the concept of putting different short films into one, but the films they chose and the way they mashed it together was truly confusing.
Also, I don't like to make fun or comment on people's appearance because it's not very nice -- but holy shit does Mickey Rourke look rough.
#48 Can You Ever Forgive Me?
I don't know what it is about most Oscar nominees, but I just do not have interest in seeing most of them. That being said, I'm glad I saw this one. It was funny, dark, and kind of thrilling.
Overall, it's an average movie, but what makes it shine is Richard Grant. He is truly a special actor. Now, I'm kind of rooting for him to win.
#49 I Am Evidence
Available on HBOGo
I know I say this a lot, but HBO does really deliver on their documentaries.
#50 Velvet Buzzsaw
Available on Netflix
I understood what this movie was going for, but it didn't really achieve it. It felt really gimmicky, which is a shame, because it has an amazing cast.
#51 Paddleton
Available on Netflix
I'm not sure if this comes across, but I'm not really a movie snob. I don't really care to watch the "classics" that people always tell me I should watch. The real love I have for movies comes from indies like this. The Duplass Brothers are consistently putting out amazing projects that remind me why I love movies every time I watch them.
#52 Memories Of A Penitent Heart
Available on Amazon Prime
One thing I've noticed with documentaries are how similarly they're edited. This one was a great change of pace and was really inventive with how it was edited.
#53 Vox Lux
Natalie Portman can really do anything.
Thanks for sticking with me another week. I'm excited to share the project my brother, Anthony, and I worked on last week.
I hope you enjoy it. It's very silly, but I had so much fun making it. I really love watching and talking about movies, but I think it's time that I make them.
See you next Sunday.
