Weekly Recap #11: Oscar Isaac, forgetting how to blink, and Us

Howdy! I'm back to my regular work week of getting up early, wearing something other than what I slept in, and commuting to work.

#71 Triple Frontier

Available on Netflix

There are a few actors that I'll watch any movie they're in, regardless of my interest in it. Oscar Isaac is one of them.

I really like military movies, but one thing my dad unknowingly ingrained in my head is judging if the actor is believable as a vet. In this case, they all really were. Granted, Special Ops is not really the kind of crowd I was raised around, but I still appreciated the respect they had for the people they were portraying.

#72 The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley

Available on HBOGo

I love every single aspect of this story. From her creepy turtle necks to her hallow eyes, I could not believe this woman was real. She's one of those people in your life that makes up weird lies and instead of forgetting about it, just doubles down and makes the lie even more harmful. I cannot wait for this to become a feature film. My wishlist for this movie is as follows:

- Aaron Sorkin writing it to go full circle with Elizabeth Holmes' Steve Jobs obsession

- Amy Adams giving an Academy Award-winning performance

- At least one scene of a one shot of her giving a speech with zero blinking

#73 Cam

Available on Netflix

I really appreciated how absurdly weird this one was. There are a lot of movies that I end up being confused about, but most of the time, I can take a stab at what it was about, but I still have no idea what happened in this one. I can't tell if I like that or hate it.

#74 Us

In theaters

As you can tell by now, this blog post is late. Mostly, I misjudged how much time I'd have to finish this post, but partly because I needed to take time to think about this one.

It's been a very long time that I've loved a movie so deeply, that I felt the need to fully flesh out my feelings before writing about it, but Us deserves nothing less. I am a type of person who hates when people hype things up, so the hype for Us really worried me because I only wanted the best for director Jordan Peele. But after seeing it on Sunday I can say, without reservations, that Us is the best films I've ever seen.

I think Peele is already becoming one of the most important filmmakers of our time. Alongside Lupita Nyong'o, who's performance I am truly speechless about.

When I first stepped out of the theater, I didn't really have much of a reaction. Then we drove home and I couldn't stop thinking about it. Then I started to feel my stomach sink with each allegory I was unable to unravel after thinking through each scene and I started to feel sick. That is what true horror is, and Peele fucking nailed it.

Thanks for sticking around. If you haven't felt compelled to watch a movie from anything I've written so far, please, for your sake, watch Us.
