Howdy! I don't really have anything to talk about at the beginning of this week, other than the fact that I need a haircut. If you know anybody who can cut curly hair, please let me know because I'm starting to look like Jon Snow, but not in a good way.
#88 Angus, Thongs, and Perfect Snogging
Available on Netflix
Teen Livia would have LOVED this movie, but adult Livia thought it was fine.
#89 The Oath
Available on Hulu
I actually really liked the message in this one. I had certain expectations for how the story would go, politically speaking, but I was pleasantly surprised by how open-minded it turned out to be.
#90 Free Fire
Available on Hulu
I remember hearing about this one a while back, but didn't have any interest. Then, I read the cast list and as soon as I saw Cillian Murphy on it, I couldn't press 'play' fast enough.
#91 We're Not Done Yet
Available on HBO
I know I say this every time I watch a documentary on HBO, but it deserves to be said every single time -- the selection of documentaries on HBO is curated to perfection. This one in particular is about military (retired & active duty) performing a poem they all wrote together. It was as heart-breaking as it was inspiring.
#92 The Perfect Date
Available on Netflix
I'm going to need teen movies to stop doing the following:
- Keeping minorities in the background, only to pop back up when the main white character needs them.
- Starting sentences with "remind me why --" to explain the character's motivation. That's just lazy storytelling.
- Using the old "pretend to date me to make my real crush jealous" plot line. When has that ever actually worked?
- Having the love interest be a girl that's "not like the other girls" because she likes to read rather than go to parties. Maybe -- and I know this may be radical -- they can like both.
- Putting Noah Centineo in their movies -- there are so many more interesting casting choices.
#93 The Addams Family
#94 Addams Family Values
Available on Hulu
I was inspired to watch these by the trailer of the new animated movie and am glad that I did. Both of these movies were funny and the perfect amount of silly.
Thanks for sticking around for another week. See ya next Sunday!
