Howdy! Last week was hectic -- in the best way possible. My best friend received his Master's and my family visited to celebrate Mother's Day. This weekend made me feel very lucky that I get to love the people that I love. And that's the cheesiest you'll ever see me, so enjoy.
116. The Last Summer
Available on Netflix
A teen drama to end all teen dramas. Picture every basic teen summer movie you've ever seen, then add Archie from Riverdale.
I understand that not every movie can blow my mind, but at the very minimum, it should make you interested in some aspect of it. Sometimes I hone in on a love story, a specific actor, or even the cinematography, but this was one of the many movies I've seen this year that had nothing of note.
117. All That We Destroy
Available on Hulu
Hulu released another one of their Into the Dark movies, this time -- it's about a spoiled mama's boy/serial killer.
Basically a Black Mirror rip off. Better luck next time, Hulu.
118. All in My Family
Available on Netflix
A documentary about a Chinese man having to confront his family's disapproval of him and his partner having children.
I really loved how honest he portrayed his family. He didn't make them seem like the bad guys, but he didn't make excuses for them either. It was a really important perspective to see.
119. Detective Pikachu
In theaters
The popular video game is now a movie -- what could go wrong?
As a Pokemon fan growing up, it was really cool to see them all, but I'm tired of nostalgia being used as a plot point. This movie was fine, but the only memorable things about it were the occasional "oh, hey look it's [insert random Pokemon name here]. The actual story was boring and predictable. I know some people will love it just because it's Pokemon and I'm not saying that's wrong, I'm just saying that I feel like the audience who has loved these characters deserve more than a Diplo cameo and some cute Squirtles running around.
120. Wine Country
Available on Netflix
A group of old friends gather in Napa to celebrate their friend's 50th birthday.
This movie had my favorite scenario (friends on a vacation in one house) and an amazing comedic cast. There were some awkward parts and lulls in the story, but overall I loved it.
121. Tell it to the Bees
A doctor helps out a single mother and her son when they fall on hard times because of a dead beat dad. The doctor and mother get close and form a *scandalous* relationship.
It's been my week of predictable movies. The title is more interesting than the plot every was.
Thanks for sticking around another week! I'm going to be changing up the format a little bit in the next few weeks, but until then -- see ya next week.
